Preparing Your Home for Fall in 5 Steps

Cooler temperatures, earlier sunsets and fallen leaves - it must be fall!

While many of us are focused on putting away our summer essentials and enjoying cozy, fall outfits, homeowners are often contemplating how to prepare their home for the change in season. Luckily, we have broken down your fall home preparation into five simple steps.

1. Clear Debris

The first step to preparing your home for colder weather is clearing debris. We suggest gathering supplies such as garbage and recycling bins, landscaping bags, gloves, and a rake, to help remove debris in a safe and effective manner.

Begin in the front of your house and make your way throughout the sides and back. Be sure to check in the garden, under your deck and even around sheds and storage areas. This is also a great opportunity to keep an eye out for any damage to the property or wildlife.

2. Store Furniture and Seasonal Items

From lounge chairs and patio tables, to outdoor furniture, BBQs and everything in between, this is the perfect time to clean and store your outdoor furniture and seasonal items. Not only will this help to clear your area for snow, but it can also help to keep your belongings in good shape.

When the frost has melted and flowers are blooming, you can bring your seasonal items back out of storage for another year of use and enjoyment!

3. Prepare Your Landscape and Water Features

To help ensure the health and quality of your landscape, we suggest taking some time to provide your lawn, gardens and water features with a little TLC!

Most pool and hot tub owners are often familiar with the importance of and steps to winterize and close their water features. If you have a pool, hot tub, pond, fountain, or other water feature and aren’t sure how to close it for the fall and winter, we suggest speaking with the experts at your local pool and spa store, landscape supply store, or pond shop.

For winterizing your lawn, the following steps should be taken:

  • Mowing

  • Soil Preparation

  • Seeding

  • Fertilizing

  • Watering

Winterizing your lawn and gardens is key to their health and long-term quality. For most plants, pruning and trimming back is suggested. Other kinds of plants may require less or more maintenance, such as being wrapped in landscaping burlap or simply left alone.

4. Clean the Exterior

Cleaning the exterior of your home can truly go a long way! Before it freezes, try to take some time to power wash the siding, windows, walkways, and even your driveway to remove dirt that has built up over the spring and summer.

This is also a great time to clean your gutters and clear the eavestroughs! This will help with better drainage and flood prevention throughout the fall and once the snow begins to melt.

5. Decorate for Fall

Now that your home is prepared for fall, it’s time to dial it up a notch with some seasonal decorations! We love to see the unique spin that many homeowners take to decorating their porches and exteriors for this time of year.

Some opt for colourful mums, bales of hay, corn stalks, pumpkins, and beautiful wreaths for the front door, while others enjoy taking a spookier approach to their curb appeal!
